 What is Holy Communion?

First Holy Communion is one of the most important events in early life for a Catholic, along with Baptism, Reconciliation and Confirmation. The First Holy Communion is a sign of Christian unity and a symbol of a Catholic's faith and devotion. First Holy Communion is typically celebrated when a child is about seven year's old.

Dress Attire for First Holy Communion

Boys - should wear a suit or dress pants and a sports coat. Suit may be black, brown, navy or white. Tie and dress shoes required. No gym shoes or sandals allowed.

Girls - should wear an all-white dress with white dress shoes. First Communion veils or headpieces are encouraged. Gloves and purses may be worn, but must be removed at the time for reception of Communion. No sandals or flip flops.

First Communion Day Schedule

9:00 AM - 11:00 AM - Individual Photos will be available from VanGogh Professional Photographers (optional)

12:30 pm - Children must be checked into the Colonnade room no later than 12:30 pm

12:40 pm - Children will be walked over to the Church for the Group Photo

12:45 pm - Doors of the Church will be opened for family members to be seated (once group photo is completed)

1:00 pm - Mass will begin

Respect and Etiquette for Communion

  • During the consecration, children should be kneeling and attentive
  • While in line to approach the altar, hands should be folded respectively
  • Prior to receiving communion they should bow and say "Amen", meaning "I believe"
  • When returning to their seat, hands should remain folded with respectful consumption of the Host
  • Upon returning to the pew, they should remain kneeling until the Host is placed in the tabernacle and Father is seated

Photographs & Videos

Since this is a sacred occasion, no pictures or videos may be taken in the church until after Mass. VanGogh will be taking professional pictures in the Colonnade Room before the service. There will be a fee sheet and order information sent home at the retreat. The completed order form and payment should be brought with you to the photo session on First Communion day. During the Mass, Killoran Photography will take a beautiful picture of every child receiving Holy Communion. These photos will be available for purchase immediately following the service.
